Where Does Electromagnetic Interference Come From?

Is there any electronic product that can be called free from interference due to electric signals? 

Simply No!

What is this sound all about?

In simple language, the electric signals that interfere with the normal functioning of the electronic equipment are electromagnetic interference. Every electronic and electric system, equipment creates some signal, which can hinder the normal functioning of another piece of equipment nearby. Not just this, EMI can lessen the functioning of the equipment, lead to operational faults, and even complete failure.

Now, Where Does This EMI Comes From?

EMI can either be self-generated, due to interference between two circuits in the equipment or created externally by some other equipment or device in the same environment.

The earliest form of Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) and radio-frequency interference (RFI) comprised of spurious signals coming from radio transmitters that are disturbed by other radios. For instance, harmonics generated by band radios led to television interference.

An exponential rise in Electromagnetic Interference is expected to happen. It is because of the rising number of wireless devices, including cell phones, GPS, and Bluetooth.   However, digital equipment, interference caused by RF Sources, and computers has become a leading cause of EMI. 

Switch-more power supplies are also one of the leading causes of EMI generation. The rising use of microwave frequencies for digital and radio applications has contributed to more EMI.

Mitigation of EMI

Management of Electromagnetic Interference has a list of solutions at both victim and emitter devices. Some of them can be raising the spacing between the victim and the source. It may also include physical orientation, such as rotating a device at 90 degrees.  However, the real solution for it can include the proper design of the equipment to reduce emissions or to make it less at risk to external EMI.  Different ways of reducing EMI can include grounding, filtering, and shielding.
